The initial situation
North Macedonia faces the challenge of combining economic growth with the sustainable use of resources. The industrial sector is expanding, but recycling systems and environmental standards lag behind current requirements. Although many companies recognise the opportunities offered by the circular economy, they often lack the knowledge and tools to put these into practice.
The approach
The project supports companies, institutions and policymakers in North Macedonia in applying circular economy principles in practice. It focuses on sharing proven approaches, technical solutions and local experiences.
The objectives and measures
The project reviews existing initiatives and needs, and pilots a self-assessment tool that helps companies identify their circular potential. Practice-oriented workshops are held within industry clusters, where businesses jointly develop solutions for greater resource efficiency.
Successful examples are showcased to encourage replication and scaling. Events such as the Circular Economy Summit and an annual award raise public awareness and foster dialogue between business, politics and academia.
In addition, the project strengthens engagement with policymakers to close regulatory and infrastructure gaps. This helps create an enabling environment that motivates companies to embed the circular economy as a strategic priority.
