NOW GmbH – National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology

Acting on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) as a programme partner for the Export Initiative Environmental Protection (EXI) funding programme, NOW GmbH implements the focus topic of green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies within decentralised energy systems.

Who we are

Our goal is a climate-neutral society. Innovative technologies and models are the way to achieve this. The National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW) pursues this goal, taking a programme- and technology-neutral approach as a federally owned company working on behalf of top-level federal agencies. NOW analyses, advises and steers, conveying and transferring its knowledge at the intersection of policy, manufacturing and research, at a national and international level.

Our engagement

Programme goals in this action area

Within the EXI programme, NOW specifically supports the deployment of green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies to facilitate environmentally friendly, reliable and decentralised energy systems. EXI projects in relation to this focus topic promote global access to these technologies while providing opportunities for technology transfer and knowledge building for German mid-sized green tech firms.

In the context of decentralised energy systems, there are an estimated 25 to 40 million diesel generators in use worldwide, either as backup systems or as the primary power generation solution (IFC, 2019). Green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies can replace these fossil-based generators in a broad spectrum of applications while offering environmentally friendly and resilient energy solutions.  If the technical and system-related benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are utilised, these can also be competitive when compared with conventional solutions. In developing and emerging markets in particular, this creates plenty of potential scenarios and market opportunities for German green tech companies.

To make this market potential visible, EXI and NOW GmbH are supporting various types of projects and creating a knowledge platform for this specific topic area. The implementation of such projects also makes a positive contribution to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that form the overall framework for EXI programme targets.

What we do

Overview of projects in the action area for green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies within decentralised energy systems

NOW GmbH provides support to projects within the focus topic of ‘green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in decentralised energy systems’, from initiation to implementation and the successful completion of the project. These undertakings include projects that receive direct support from NOW, such as feasibility studies as well as pilot and model initiatives. In addition, NOW GmbH supports work conducted by DIHK Service GmbH as part of the Chambers for GreenTech project. These projects are implemented by the German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs).

In addition, NOW GmbH links up the knowledge gained in the individual EXI projects to maintain a knowledge platform, which is expanded and extended by complementary publications such as studies and fact sheets.  As the point of contact for content handled within this topic area, NOW communicates findings actively to relevant stakeholders, promotes dialogue within the subjects, especially within manufacturing and research, and supports the networking of both topics and project partners with other organisations commissioned by the federal government.
