Within the scope of the Export Initiative Environmental Protection, GIZ has been commissioned by the Federal Environment Ministry to support the Egyptian government with pilot measures for introducing a national EPR (extended producer responsibility) system. The principle of extended producer responsibility envisages manufacturers taking responsibility for the entire lifecycle of their products. EPR is therefore intended to drive the transition to a circular economy. In the video, Dr Tarek Al Araby, director of the regulatory authority for waste management, Dr Hazem Al Zanan, director of the Egyptian national waste management programme and Christoph Pautrat, COO of the Landbell firm of consultants specialising in the environment and waste management, talk about how introducing an EPR system for packaging waste can boost recycling rates and improve waste management while covering costs.
