Azerbaijan’s water and wastewater management sector still offers room for development. Not only the private supply network, but also agricultural Irrigation is in need of Investment. International financial institutions have been providing support; however, Azerbaijan will require additional Capital for its water, wastewater and Irrigation sector in the long term. The national water utility Azersu OJSC invests several hundred million US-dollars in water and wastewater projects every year. Nevertheless, universal, safe and efficient water supply has not yet been achieved.

The overarching goal of the project was therefore, to make a sustainable contribution to the further development of water management in Azerbaijan to promote and protect not only the environment, but also the health of the Azerbaijani population.

To this end, AHK Azerbaijan initially trained employees of SMEs as well as state and municipal institutions as part of the 'Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management' course. A brief analysis was also conducted to examine the opportunities and challenges for sustainable water management and the needs of the Azerbaijani market.

A study trip for producers of environmental technology to Baku in spring 2021 laid the foundation for an exchange between German and Azerbaijani Companies and at the same time offered SMEs support for a successful market entry. Participants were given access to first-hand Information as well as advice and contacts with potential business Partners from the public and private sector.

The central measure of the project was the German-Azerbaijani business forum 'Sustainable water and wastewater management for Azerbaijan' in April 2021, which brought together the most important players from both countries in panel discussions and strategy workshops. This enabled a Professional and solution-oriented exchange between relevant stakeholders. The results of the forum and other project results were recorded in the form of a Strategie Position paper and now serve as a basis for further Cooperation between the participants.
