South Africa
The core of the applied feasibility study was to examine the possibilities of establishing a Smart Green Logistic Corridor (GLC) in South Africa. Specifically, the implementation between a South African seaport and Gauteng, the economic hub in Southern Africa, was researched. The successful establishment of this Green Logistic Corridor is not only expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve traffic flow, but also to achieve considerable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the technical, infrastructural and legal framework, levels of control, communication interfaces, and the collection and analysis of data on traffic flow and control are some of the aspects that were examined. The project was augmented by preliminary testing of data collection and bidirectional communication options.
The goal was the development of a technical and communicative solution that provides the lowest-barrier implementation options, thus enabling the potential for a broad market-oriented solution in South Africa and prospectively the African continent.
