The initial situation
Alongside China and India, Indonesia has the largest number of scooters, mopeds and motorbikes. Government subsidy programmes are rapidly driving the conversion of the two-wheeler sector from petrol to electric mobility. However, with the growing number of electrically powered two-wheelers, the number of used lithium-ion batteries is also increasing. To date, there has been a lack of suitable infrastructure for their safe treatment, dismantling and material recovery. This leads to ecological risks and the loss of valuable raw materials.
The approach
This is where the EV-Recycling-IDN project comes in. Together with Indonesian partners, the first demonstration plant for recycling batteries from electric scooters is being built. Diagnostic and dismantling technologies from Germany are being used to ensure safety and efficiency. The construction of a semi-automated recycling line closes technological gaps in the disposal sector and creates the basis for a sustainable battery industry.
The objectives and measures
The central objective is to set up an operational pilot plant that demonstrates how batteries can be professionally dismantled and recyclable materials recovered. At the same time, the project is developing a comprehensive training programme. In a train-the-trainer approach, experts will train multipliers themselves in future. At least ten trainers will qualify to pass on knowledge to universities, authorities and industry.
In addition, a permanent training centre for battery recycling is being established in Indonesia. It combines technical demonstration, training and political dialogue. The close integration of these elements makes the project a model that can also be used in other emerging countries with growing e-mobility.
