The project "Protection of water resources in Russia: modernization of wastewater treatment in the Russian industry" was implemented by the German-Russian Chamber of Commerce (AHK Russland) as part of the Environmental Technologies Export Initiative of the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). In the framework of the project, German experts in cooperation with Russian industrial enterprises from two water-polluted regions developed solutions for two leading Russian industries responsible for a large proportion of polluted wastewater discharges.

The project was implemented from October 2021 to March 2022 in several modules. In the course of the first module, interviews were conducted with responsible authorities from nine pre-selected Russian regions and industrial enterprises from three industries in order to identify problem spots and select two target regions and industries for the project. A preliminary list of the regions and industries from which the selection was made is provided below:

1. Chemical and petrochemical industry (Republic of Tatarstan, Republic of Bashkortostan, Tyumen Region)
2. Metallurgy (Chelyabinsk Region, Sverdlovsk Region, Lipetsk Region)
3. Agriculture and food manufacturing industry (Rostov Region, Stavropol Region, Belgorod Region)

The second module was dedicated to selecting German wastewater treatment experts. During the third and fourth modules, the experts will have online and offline meetings with responsible authorities and industrial plants from the target regions which will result in developing solutions for establishing and modernizing wastewater treatment facilities in the two target industries.

As a final result of the project, strategy papers will be prepared, which will be discussed on a federal level and made available to as wide a professional audience as possible, as well as to the general public.

All interested state authorities, industry associations, industrial enterprises, suppliers of technologies, equipment and construction solutions for water treatment from Russia and Germany were invited to participate in the project.
