Today, 35 million people in Brazil's population are still not connected to the water supply network, which represents the amount of the Canadian population. At the same time, this does not mean that those who are connected to the water supply network actually always have water available, or as well that the water coming out of the tap is drinkable. On the waster water side, today the water of 110 million Brazilians is still not treated, which is more than half the total population of Brazil. Of these, 73% are not even connected to water treatment and therefore live in close proximity and contact with their untreated wastewater, with all the associated health risks.

In order to improve these current water supply and sanitation situations in metropolitan and as well in rural areas, there is a call for applications bringing greater efficiency and sustainability in the use of resources and the use of management of operating companies. A new deregulation movement by the Brazilian government is intended to create new legal framework conditions, giving German environmental technologies great business opportunities in drinking and wastewater treatment and water drainage.

The overall project objective was therefore to develop concepts that can contribute to a stronger and more sustainable water management in the long term. These should contribute to improve the quality of drinking water, promote the more efficient use of resources and help prevent the discharge of untreated waste water into nature. The exchange of knowledge and experience between the German and Brazilian environmental economy took place at an important time of market deregulation. For this purpose, an analysis of the status quo will be created and a sustainable network of stakeholders and experts was established via a microsite platform in the Internet. In addition, this project promoted an innovative exchange of experience in discussion groups so that strategies and concepts for concrete project ideas and investments could be presented.
